Comment on: The Canadian International Medical Graduate Bottleneck: A New Problem for New Doctors

چکیده

The process of returning to Canada to complete our residency training varies by province, and there exists an irony in the process that is no more evident than in British Columbia (BC). Only 24 of 279 residency positions in BC were dedicated to international medical graduates (IMGs) in the 2012 match, 3 but virtually no BC residents in their final year of medical school abroad were able to apply for these first iteration positions. This is due to a restrictive BC assessment program for IMGs, that is simply timed too late in the year, such that most CSAs are ineligible to apply to the match in their final year of medical school; the current IMG system is better suited for landed immigrants who hold foreign medical degrees.

Factoring Health Equations; Comment on “Do You Recommend an Interdisciplinary Field to Your Graduate Student?”

The International Journal of Health Policy and Management (IJHPM) is a new journal that aims to stimulate not only inter-disciplinary research relating to health, but even an entire new generation of such journals. The challenges of improving human health worldwide clearly suggest ‘why’ such a journal is needed, but ‘how’ bridges and junctions across fields of study towards this end might be fo...

This commentary follows up on an editorial by Eyal and colleagues in which these authors discuss the implications of the emergence of non-physician clinicians (NPCs) on the health labour market for the education of medical doctors. We generally agree with those authors and we want to stress the importance of clarifying the terminology to describe these practitioners and of defining more formall...

Breaking Gridlock in Health Policy?; Comment on “A New Synthesis”

Pierre-Gerlier Forest has put forward the case that we are on the brink of a revolution in health policy that will be the result of the interplay of five factors. I would not challenge any of them but would emphasize the need to address socio-economic health inequalities, which have the potential to become a major cost driver in a time of growing economic inequality. To Dr. Forest’s list, I wou...

A New Synthesis in Search of Synthesizing Agents; Comment on “A New Synthesis”

In a recent editorial in this journal Pierre-Gerlier Forest foretells a coming revolution in health policy based on the synthesis of four conceptual innovations and one technological breakthrough. As much as I agree with the intellectual story told in this editorial I present a more skeptical view of the effect of paradigm shifts on healthcare systems on the ground. I argue that ideas triumph w...
